Flash Fiction Friday: The Procedure

Simon looked around the doctor’s office. Blank, white walls. Plain, dark chairs. He gulped. “Do I have to do this?”

His mom patted his hand. “You’ll be fine.”

“But why do I gotta get it done? I’m not sick or anything.”

“Sweetheart, we’ve talked about this. Science has advanced in recent years. There are things we just don’t need anymore. Like the appendix. You wouldn’t complain if they took that out, right? If it burst, it could be deadly.”

“Yeah, but I like my body the way it is.”

His mom sighed. “Simon, technology has come so far. We’ve got robots to do almost all of our physical work. Our house and cars are run on computers that I can control with just my voice. Don’t be afraid of the changes in our world. This is for the best.”

The boy frowned and glanced around the room one more time. What will it be like not to see colors?

“No worries.” His mom brushed hair from his brow. “You won’t need your eyes, Simon. You’ll be just fine without them.”
