Book Review: Hollow City – Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

It’s that time again! OK, so I went longer than normal for a review, but that’s only because prior to reading this one, I read another book that was a first in a trilogy. I’ve decided to read the other two books and then leave one review for the series 🙂

Having said that, I was uber excited to get my hands on the next book in the Peculiar Children series by Ransom Riggs. Hollow City is book two out of what I assume will end up being a three novel series.

The book picks up right where it left off at the end of 1 – Jacob and his fellow peculiar children are adrift in a lifeboat, hoping to find safety from the evil wights and hollows that chase them. They were successful in rescuing Miss Peregrine from the wights, however she is having trouble transforming back to her human form. This sets them on a journey for the duration of the book, as they search for a way to help her recover, so she can in turn help them figure out how to save the remaining ymbrynes that have been captured.

Once again, Mr. Riggs uses old pictures to depict and inspire the direction his tale goes, which I continue to admire as just genius. I loved reading the description of each scene, and then getting to see it, too! I was curious to see how he was going to use the cover photo and was pleasantly surprised at that part of the storyline 😉

I really enjoyed the adventures the children encountered in the book, especially the other peculiar children and adults they came in contact with. Mr. Riggs did a good job explaining even more of the Peculiar world that we did not already know, again, setting up for a third book. The end had a twist I did not see coming and made me smile as I thought of what it would mean for the next installment. (**The smile was only after my Kindle died with less than 2 pages left to read! Ack! I then had to wait for it to charge to get to the ending. Talk about bad timing! 😉 )

I would give this a solid 4 star rating, only because I felt it got a little slow in a few spots. Definitely a good middle installment that will not disappoint! If you are a fan of Miss Peregrine’s world, you will love to enter back into the world of the peculiar once again. If you haven’t yet picked up the first one, be sure to borrow Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children from your local library so you can get started on this one!

Thanks, Mr. Riggs for an entertaining book worthy to recommend!

Happy Reading, friends!
